Two Birds
I think it is such a good idea to have those 1st graders graphing the temperature, ect. daily. Those 1st graders are "killing two birds with one stone," they are learning to use the graphing technology they have available, plus they are learning new math skills all at the same time. They can then compile all of their information at the end of the week and then do another math project. Hands on learning I feel is the best way to learn because your hand, eyes, and brain are all engaged, which helps you remember. So using the technology provided, makes them physically use their hands, eyes, and brain. Doing this project early in the morning gets their brains in the school mode again and lets them interact with classmates.

I loved the idea of graphing the temp. It seems that often teachers over look the obvious. Our 5th graders were struggling with reading a thermometer, and the teacher was saying that she didn't know where to fit it in. I suggested that she get a thermometer and hang it out their classroom window. They can all take turns, and also incorporate it into states of matter and other topics.
I also think that using technology in the classroom enhances and deepens the learning taking place. Using a different hands on method of teaching , such as calculators, holds the attention of the class and keeps them interested and remembering a lesson better.
I also loved the graphing and using spread sheets ideas. I think it's an awesome way to incorporate other subjects. Another way of killing two birds with one stone (graphing = math and weather = science)
I feel that having the children record the tempature every day, and then graphing it as well helps them remember better. My mentor for my program does this with her class every day. When it is time for their weather journals most the children have their hands up ready to give their answers.
