The following address and link: PACMAN corresponds with the lesson plan, "Greater than or less than with, “Mr. Great.”"
The prerequisite knowledge needed in order to make this lesson successful is essentially understanding of numbers and a slight understanding of "PAC-Man." It is really not too demanding information.
This plan is sort of interesting in how it correlates with the Minnesota Standards. The delivery and strategies that are used in this lesson are unique. The MN math standards have inequality equations to be covered for the first time in 5th grade. Where as the strategies and methods of delivery in this lesson seem to be more appropriate in a 2nd 3rd or maybe a 4th grade level. I think this is aimed more for the grades of 2-3. I do think that inequalities can and should be used earlier than 5th grade. 5.2.3.1 is the first strand or benchmark that the state of MN recommends for inequalities. Not so much for the purpose of accurate inequality understanding, but for a stronger understanding of number understanding on a bigger scale. Later on in school it could help understanding of all numbers and different platforms of math.
I think the manipulative of a less than or bigger than is extremely fun and effective for students. The construct that it creates seems to be very strong. I know the game PAC-man is not as widely understood as it might have been 10 years ago but it is still a simple concept to understand. If this was to be delivered as a presentation, modeled then practiced individually and then in groups of 2 I think it would be even more effective. I would use this lesson in my math class and I would deliver it in that manner.
I also stumbled across a site that makes it possible to create custom worksheets for students to practice and gain further knowledge.
