Geometry and Manipulatives
I think it is important to start teaching geometry in some way to students at the elementary level. In teaching geometry at this young of an age, manipulatives is going to be extremely important. For students to understand complex (or even simple) geometry problems, they are going to have to see/feel it with manipulatives. Manipulatives are going to aid the students and teachers in understanding geometry and how it works and how it can be used to build on more complex ideas.

My son was in kindergarten this year and they started on geometry. I was shocked at first but realized that what they learned they could relate to in the environment around them. They mainly learned how to classify geometric shapes such as cylinders, spheres, etc.but it was fun to see him call a pop can a cylinder and also quiz me on the various shapes.
